We’ve been to Manila a few times, and to be honest… It’s not our favourite place in the Philippines.
It's a massive, busy city with some crime issues, and it’s not exactly built for tourists. It's also very expensive compared to other places in the country.
That's why most people (including us) use Manila as a jump-off point.
Most international flights stop there, so you pretty much stay at the airport while you wait for your connecting flight to Coron, El Nido, Cebu, etc.
However, if you HAVE to stay in Manila, here are some things to know:
HOW LONG TO STAY?
If you’re curious about the city, 1-2 days is more than enough to explore a couple of historic or cultural spots.
Safe areas to stay at: Makati or Bonifacio Global City (BFC). These have cleaner streets and heavy security.
Avoid these areas: Tondo, Baseco, Navotas, Malabon... Here's a list of the main slums in Metro Manila, avoid staying there.
GETTING AROUND
GrabCar: Easiest and safest for most travellers.
Taxis: Only use official ones and insist on the meter.
Jeepneys: Cheap and local, but not for everyone. There's no air-con, very crowded, and can be confusing to navigate.
SAFETY TIPS
Don’t walk with your phone out along busy roads. Motorbike “riding-in-tandem” thefts are common in some districts.
Use Grab or reputable taxis from the airport. Ignore the guys offering “special deals” in the arrivals area.
Avoid EDSA during rush hour (6–9 am and 5–8 pm), traffic can trap you for hours.
Watch for snatchers near Quiapo, Divisoria, and Baclaran markets.
Keep phones and wallets in front pockets or a cross-body bag you can hold.
If using jeepneys, sit near the driver or at the front to keep an eye on your stuff. Hand fare forward with exact change.
If you visit nightlife areas like Poblacion, stick with friends, keep your drink in sight, and use Grab to get back.
