By the time you’ve had your second cup of coffee and driven 100 kilometres of rough road, a very different ‘attraction’ comes into focus: the loo. To ensure your adventure doesn’t turn into a stressful search in the middle of nowhere, I’ve summarised everything you need to know here. In many places with parking fees, toilets are included; otherwise, expect charges of between 200 and 400 ISK.

What to expect in this guide:

  • Petrol Stations along the Ring Road: Your most reliable lifelines (N1, OlĂs, Orkan) – often free for customers.

  • Visitor Centers & Attractions: Modern facilities at key sites; often included in the parking fee.

  • Remote Areas: Rustic outhouses or chemical toilets at trailheads – functional luxury in the cold.

  • Outdoor Etiquette: How to protect nature and avoid leaving "white flags" (toilet paper).

What to pack in your ‘emergency kit’:

  • Toilet paper & wet wipes.

  • Bins bags for proper disposal.

  • Card or Smartphone: For contactless payment (standard almost everywhere).

  • Some loose change: Only for the absolute emergencies at isolated hiking car parks.

What you can expect from the interactive map:

The map is clearly divided into the following categories:

  • 📍 Public Toilets

  • ⛽ Petrol Stations & Mini-markets

  • 📸 Tourist Attractions

  • ☕ CafĂŠs & Restaurants (Ask nicely!).

  • 🏛️ Museums.
