Rathlin West Lighthouse, located on the west end of Rathlin Island, has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s. Initially proposed as a light and fog signal station, it finally became operational in 1919 after years of planning and construction. The lighthouse was converted to electric in 1983 and is now unmanned, with maintenance duties carried out by an attendant. The fog signal was discontinued in 1995, and the light is now exhibited during daylight hours in times of reduced visibility. Visitors can explore this historic lighthouse as part of the Great Lighthouses of Ireland initiative, offering a unique glimpse into maritime safety and heritage.
