The Colosseum is the perfect place to begin your first day in Rome. Massive, dramatic and instantly recognizable, it gives you that unforgettable moment of realizing you are truly standing inside the ancient world.
This is Rome’s most iconic monument for a reason. Even if you only see it from the outside, its scale is powerful enough to set the tone for the entire day.
Why it matters in this itinerary
Starting here gives the day immediate emotional impact. It anchors the route in Ancient Rome before moving toward the historic center.
How to get here
Take Metro B to Colosseo. The metro exit brings you directly in front of the Colosseum, which makes it one of the easiest and most dramatic starts to a Rome itinerary.
If you are staying nearby, you can also walk here early in the morning.
Insider tip
Go early if possible. The light is softer, the area is calmer, and the first view of the Colosseum feels much more cinematic.
If you do not have time to enter, still walk around the outside and see it from different angles. The monument changes completely depending on the light.
Estimated time
45 minutes from outside
2 to 3 hours if visiting inside with the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill
Travel tip
If this is your only day in Rome and you want to enter the Colosseum, book tickets in advance. Otherwise, admire it from the outside and keep the day lighter.
Local warning
Avoid eating directly beside the Colosseum unless you already saved a trusted place. This is one of the easiest areas in Rome to overpay for a mediocre meal.
