Directions

The Maspalomas Dunes in southern Gran Canaria are a breathtaking landscape of golden sand dunes stretching between the Atlantic Ocean and the famous Maspalomas coastline. This unique natural reserve feels like a small desert beside the sea, with constantly shifting patterns of sand shaped by the wind, creating a peaceful and ever-changing environment.

Walking through the dunes reveals a world of rolling sand hills, soft curves, and dramatic textures that change throughout the day. The contrast between the warm golden sand, deep blue ocean, and distant mountains makes Maspalomas one of the most iconic landscapes in the Canary Islands.

For photography, the best time to visit is during sunrise and the early morning hours, when the low-angle light creates long shadows, highlights the delicate shapes of the dunes, and gives the sand a warm, golden glow. The cooler temperatures and quieter atmosphere also make this the most peaceful time to explore.

Sunset is another excellent moment for photography, especially for capturing silhouettes, warm colours, and the changing tones of the landscape as the sun disappears over the Atlantic. During midday, the strong overhead light can flatten the textures and create harsh contrasts, making it less ideal for capturing the dunes’ natural beauty.

Maspalomas is a place where light, wind, and sand constantly interact - offering photographers a landscape that feels both timeless and completely different with every visit.
