Welcome to one of Japan's most breathtaking sights, the magnificent "floating" torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine. You'll want to check the tide schedule before you visit; at high tide, the gate appears to magically float on the water, creating an unforgettable, serene image. When the tide recedes, you can walk right out across the sand to stand beneath its immense vermilion pillars and truly appreciate its scale. The entire island has a sacred, peaceful atmosphere, and watching the sun set behind the gate is an experience you won't soon forget.
