Renting a Car in Andalucia

If you plan to explore beyond Cádiz, renting a car is one of the best ways to experience southern Spain at your own pace. For this trip, I rented a car from Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Jerez de la Frontera, drove to Cádiz, and then continued along the Costa del Sol before returning the vehicle in Málaga.

This one-way rental made it easy to combine cities, coastal towns, and countryside destinations without needing to backtrack.

My Experience

I picked up the car in Jerez, where roads were easy to navigate, and drove to Cádiz. After exploring the city, I continued east through Andalusia and eventually dropped the car off in Málaga. The process was straightforward, and driving in the region was much easier than I expected.

Driving Tips for Spain

• Most highways are modern and well maintained.

• Roundabouts are very common.

• Parking in historic centers can be limited.

• Automatic cars are available but should be reserved in advance.

• Fuel stations are widely available.

• Speed limits are posted in kilometers per hour.

Navigation

• I highly recommend using Waze, which provides excellent routing and alerts for speed cameras and traffic conditions.

• You will need to have an eSIM for connectivity, otherwise it's worth getting GPS in the car to ensure you always have navigation and don't get lost.

Parking in Cádiz

• The historic center has narrow streets and limited parking. If your accommodation offers parking, reserve it ahead of time. Otherwise, consider parking in a public garage and exploring the city on foot.

• I parked in Parque muelle Reina Sofia - it was the most affordable parking in Cadiz, recommended by locals. For the entire 3 days, I only paid USD25 and it was safe at night.

Should You Rent a Car?

If your trip includes only Cádiz and Jerez, trains work very well. However, if you plan to continue to destinations such as Ronda, Setenil de las Bodegas, Marbella, or other parts of the Costa del Sol, renting a car offers far more flexibility and makes the journey part of the experience itself.
