🎿 Skiing & Winter Tips

  • Ski season runs roughly from December to March, but it depends heavily on snowfall — January and February are the most reliable months for good snow conditions

  • Buy your ski pass online before you arrive — it's cheaper and you avoid the morning queues at the ticket office when everyone is trying to get on the slopes at the same time

  • Hit the slopes early — the best skiing is between 9:00 and 11:00am, before the crowds arrive and before the snow starts to soften in the sun

  • Avoid weekends in January and February if you can — the resort fills up with visitors from Bucharest and queues for the chairlift can reach 30 to 40 minutes. A midweek visit is a completely different experience

  • Rental equipment is available at multiple points around the resort — prices are similar everywhere, but shops in Brașov city (before you head up) are 20 to 30% cheaper than in the resort itself

  • Artificial snow covers most of the slopes, meaning even low-snowfall winters allow for skiing — check the official slope status before you travel to know what's open

  • Night skiing is available on some slopes until 9pm — the slopes are illuminated, significantly less crowded than during the day, and a completely different atmosphere worth experiencing at least once

🌿 Summer Tips

  • Poiana Brașov in summer is a completely different place — forests, hiking trails, clean mountain air, and none of the winter crowds. Much quieter and noticeably cheaper

  • The chairlift runs in summer too — take it up and walk down on the forest trail, or do it in reverse. One of the most enjoyable easy hikes in the area

  • Mountain biking trails are marked through the forest for all skill levels, with rentals available in the resort

  • Paragliding — the Poiana Brașov area offers good conditions for tandem paragliding with an instructor, with spectacular views over the mountains and the city below

🍽 Food & Restaurant Tips

  • Coliba Haiducilor requires a reservation — in peak season, book at least 2 to 3 days in advance, sometimes a full week ahead. Don't show up without one

  • The lunch menu at several restaurants in the resort is significantly cheaper than dinner — the same food, sometimes at half the price. Worth planning around if you're watching the budget

  • Mulled wine and local brandy at the mountain refuges on the slopes — part of the complete Romanian mountain experience. Don't skip it

  • Prices inside the resort are higher than in Brașov city — if you're staying for several days, it's worth going down to the city for a supermarket run or a more affordable dinner

🚗 Transport & Getting There Tips

  • From Bucharest — about 2.5 hours by car on the A1 and DN1, or take the train to Brașov and then a taxi or bus up to Poiana

  • Parking in the resort is limited and fills up fast on weekends — arrive early or stay directly in the resort to avoid the stress

  • Bus number 20 connects Brașov city center to Poiana Brașov — it departs from Livada Poștei, costs a few lei, and takes about 30 minutes. The cheapest option if you don't have a car

  • Taxis from Brașov to Poiana cost around 50 to 80 RON one way — agree on the price before you get in or use the Clever app to avoid surprises

🏨 Accommodation Tips

  • Staying in the resort is more expensive but saves you transport time and money if you're skiing every day — worth it for a focused ski trip

  • Staying in Brașov city is 30 to 40% cheaper — a better option if you want to combine skiing with exploring the city

  • Book at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance in peak season — Christmas, New Year's Eve, and February weekends sell out fast

  • Christmas and New Year are the most expensive periods — accommodation prices can be double compared to the rest of the ski season. Book very early or adjust your dates if budget matters

📱 General Tips

  • Weather changes fast — even if it's sunny in Brașov city, up in Poiana it can be foggy or windy. Always bring an extra layer regardless of how the morning looks

  • Sunscreen on the slopes — snow reflects UV rays strongly and sunburn on the mountain happens fast, even on overcast days. Apply and reapply

  • Mountain weather forecastingmountain-forecast.com is significantly more accurate for slope conditions than standard weather apps. Check it the night before

🗺 Day Trip Tips

  • Brașov old town is 13km away and 20 minutes by car — Piața Sfatului, the Black Church, Rope Street, and the cable car up to Tampa Hill are all worth half a day

  • Bran Castle is 30km from Poiana — Dracula's castle, one of the most visited landmarks in Romania. Go early in the morning before the tour buses arrive

  • Râșnov Fortress is 15km away — a medieval hilltop citadel with excellent views, less crowded than Bran, and genuinely impressive

  • Sinaia is 45km south — Peleș Castle, Sinaia Monastery, and another mountain resort worth combining into a day trip

  • Cheile Râșnoavei is 20 minutes away — a spectacular hiking gorge that most visitors to Poiana never find, which is exactly why it's worth going
