La Spezia is a practical and well-connected city in Liguria, often used as a gateway to the famous Cinque Terre. While it’s not as picturesque as the nearby villages, it’s a very convenient base for travel, especially if you want easier access to trains and more affordable accommodation.
The city has a working-port feel, but you’ll still find pleasant areas along the waterfront, local restaurants, cafés, and shops. It’s a good place to stay if you prefer fewer crowds compared to the Cinque Terre villages, while still being just a short train ride away from them.
One of the highlights is the marina and promenade, which are nice for an evening walk, especially when the weather is good. From here, you can also easily organize day trips to places like Manarola, Riomaggiore, or Monterosso.
La Spezia is more about convenience than charm, but it plays an important role in any Cinque Terre itinerary and can be a smart choice for budget-friendly stays.
If you’re visiting the region, I’d recommend it mainly as a base rather than a destination on its own—but a useful and efficient one.
