The Chichibu Night Festival is one of Japan's three major float festivals and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event. Every year, Chichibu comes alive with ornate illuminated floats, traditional music, street food, and a stunning fireworks display.

The main festivities take place around Chichibu Shrine on December 3, when massive floats are pulled through the streets and up the famous Dango-zaka slope.

Things to know:

  • 🎇 Fireworks begin in the evening on December 3.

  • 🚆 Trains become extremely crowded—arrive early and expect long lines after the festival.

  • 🏨 Book accommodations several months in advance.

  • 🥶 Temperatures can drop below freezing, so dress warmly.

  • 🚗 Many roads close to traffic during the festival.

My tip: Stay overnight if possible. The festival is at its best after dark, and the return trains to Tokyo can be packed.
