Color here is something you see, touch, mix, and understand. This experience brings you closer to one of the most defining elements of the Luberon landscape.

Ôkhra Écomusée de l’Ocre, located just outside Roussillon on the Route d’Apt, is set inside a former ochre factory dating back to 1921. Once producing pigments exported worldwide, the site now offers an immersive look into the history, techniques, and craftsmanship behind ochre production.

During your visit, you can explore the old industrial buildings, follow the full transformation process of ochre from raw material to pigment, and learn about the workers who shaped the region’s identity. Guided tours provide deeper insight, while illustrated panels and testimonies bring the site to life.

What makes this place stand out is the hands-on experience. Both adults and children can experiment with natural pigments, create their own paints, and join creative workshops using ochre and plant-based materials. Longer workshops and training sessions are also available for those interested in decorative techniques.

The visit pairs perfectly with the nearby Sentier des Ocres, which you can reach on foot in about 20 minutes.

👉 Local Tip: Visit in the morning, then walk to the ochre trail afterward. Understanding how pigments are made makes the landscape feel completely different when you see the cliffs in person.
