One of our personal favorite hikes is the Vereda do Areiro, or commonly known as the Pico Do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, that connects three iconic peaks on the island. Starting at Pico do Arieiro, you pass through tunnels, steep slopes, and even a staircase carved into the rock to reach Pico Ruivo. This is a moderately challenging hike, but it’s certainly doable for most people and you’ll be rewarded with some of the best views of the highest mountains. 

We chose to park at the Pico Do Arierio car park and complete the hike both ways, covering a total distance of approximately 12 kilometers and taking around 6-8 hours to complete (we took lots of photo stops). You can also opt to do the hike one way, starting from either end and finishing at the other. However, if you choose to do it one way, you will have to book a transfer or arrange for someone to pick you up at the other end. 

This is one of the most popular hikes on the island so we reccomend starting at sunrise as it will be much quieter and you'll most likely see a beautiful sunrise.

Parking Fee: 4,00 € / hour

As of January 1st 2025, Madeira requires tourists to pay a €3 hiking fee for recommended routes (PR trails), to help preserve the island's natural beauty and manage the growing number of tourists. if you do not pay you could be fined up to €50. Children under 12 and Madeira residents are exempt.
