Perito Moreno Glacier is the natural wonder that is likely the entire reason you've booked this trip to El Calafate, am I right?
This is one of the easiest to access glaciers in the world (I am guessing, don't fact check me). As in, you can park your car, cross the parking lot, and within minutes be on the viewing decks watching icebergs calve into Lago Argentino. But accessible may not equal affordable.
There are a lot of ways to get to and tour Perito Moreno and the budgets vary wildly. Some tours are very very expensive, but you can also definitely do this on a budget. All options will be memorable, bucket list experiences.
Let's dive into your options, and for more detail, read my complete guide to visiting Perito Moreno.
There are a few different paths you can take for different views. You can also book tickets for a boat excursion onto the lake from within the park. It's all very easy to visit on your own if you choose. Read my article for details on the paths, etc.
How to get to Perito Moreno Glacier:
🚌 Bus: There are buses the depart from the main bus terminal downtown. Since this is a tourist attraction an hour outside of the city, these aren't cheap city buses. They are charter buses and cost around 30-50 dollars per ticket. Check and book your ticket here. If visiting in low season you can just book your ticket on the fly.
🚗Taxi/Private Driver: If you're traveling with multiple people, it can make financial sense (and be far more convenient) to hire a driver for the day or take a taxi to Glaciar Perito Moreno.
📸 Day Tour: When it comes down to it, a group tour like this with an informative guide usually costs just a smidge more than your other options. Pay just a little more and have all your logistics taken care of.
🧊 Perito Moreno Glacier Tours and Experiences:
There are a lot of tours you can book for different budgets and interests. Let's dive in.
Day tour of Perito Moreno: I mentioned this tour above, but it's a budget friendly group tour and a great option. Spend a bit more money (but balance it out by dividing it with another traveler or two) and book this private tour instead.
Big Ice Trek: There is only one company operating the glacier treks onto Perito Moreno - Hielo y Aventura. You may see it elsewhere, those are third parties. Book the cheapest option you see, no matter what, you'll be on the same tour in the end. Check age limits, they are strictly enforced (18-50 is the limit for the Big Ice).
Mini Trekking: Hielo y Aventura also runs the mini treks, which are shorter and less demanding than the Big Ice. There are two options: minitrekking 1 and minitrekking 2 (creative, I know). Mintrekking 2 takes you a bit further onto the ice and is slightly more challenging.
Kayak Perito Moreno: Get up close and personal to the glacier by paddling in Lago Argentino among its icebergs. This is a full day experience, like the glacier treks, also including time at the viewing decks.
