Punta Norte, as the name suggests, is the northern point of the Peninsula Valdes. The drive time from Puerto Piramides to Punta Norte is about an hour. Keep your eyes open as you drive to see guanacos, ñandus (rheas), and furry armadillos scurrying by the road.
Once here there is a large parking lot and a small visitor center. There is a public bathroom available here near the parking lot. To spot the seals there are long wooden boardwalks to get different vantage points of the beach below.
🦭What can you see in Punta Norte? There is a resident elephant seal colony here and you may spot the occasional sea lion darting in the waves, as well. And when you have baby seals, you have natural predators. That makes Punta Norte one of the best places here to spot Orcas.
How to see orcas: Be very lucky. There are a few things you can do to put the odds in your favor but it ultimately comes down to luck. Are the orcas hunting here today? Beyond luck, time your visit for high tide. Stay for 1-2 hours before and after high tide. Devoted photographers will stay for 3-4 hours at a time every day for days on end hoping to get THE shot of an orca beaching itself while hunting seals.
When is high tide? Check in tourist information in Puerto Piramides the day before going or the morning of to confirm the tide tables. You can also check online.
🐧Itinerary Tip: You're right next to Estancia San Lorenzo here. Schedule your tour with them to see their penguin colony then head over here to see the seals.
