Quila Quina is a beach and recreational area on the southern shores of Lago Lacar. You'll drive south from San Martin de los Andes on Ruta 40 until you see the access road to your right. You will drive 14 kilometers down this dirt road, weaving through switch backs along the way. You'll descend, ascend again, then finally descend one final time to the beach. Drive slowly for both the curves and the loose sheep that wander into the road.
Tours: Rather than drive you can book this excursion from SMA, just know your time will be limited in Quila Quina and you'll be with the largest crowd. But it is a great opportunity if driving yourself is not an option.
Entrance Fee: At the entrance you'll stop your car to pay the entrance fee to the local Mapuche community. As of November 2025 that fee was in 7,000 pesos. Bring cash. And if you are reading this at a much later date expect that number to be higher due to inflation.
Facilities: Boat tours come here regularly so there is a wooden pier with a restaurant and information office. The restaurant is, honestly, overpriced and basic fast food but will do in a pinch. There are bathrooms (have small bills on hand to toss in the tip jar). Along the parking lot is a craft market selling a little bit of everything you see in these sorts of markets - crafts, teas, etc.
Activities: During the summer there are activities like kayaking and stand up paddle available by the hour on the beach. Horseback rides are also offered by local guides and the Mapuche community. You'll see signs for all of these once you're here.
In low season this is all unavailable but we always enjoy ourselves here without the crowds. As a couple we relaxed on the beach, now with kids we spent hours while they threw rocks into the water and played in the sand.
