The mural "The Return of Quinquela" in Barracas is the largest in the world by a single artist, Pelado.
Stretching 100 meters long and 13 meters high, it's main feature is a portrait of the Buenos Aires painter Benito Quinquela Martin. This artist was from La Boca and largely painted port scenes of ships, sailors, and the like. This features heavily in the mural.
The project was part of a social housing initiative, providing new homes for families living in precarious conditions near the Riachuelo river. Pelado's artwork pays homage to Quinquela's depictions of everyday life in the docks of Buenos Aires, with scenes of factories, boats, and workers, as well as portraits of local residents and their pets.
I have been out here a few times and once a man came out from his home to show me his portrait painted on his wall. It was so cool to see the mural in real life and his pride in it all. The mural isn't just on one wall but snakes through a few blocks so have a wander.
How to get here: The area is safe but not so safe that you should wander. It is also very far from just about everything. Be cautious. Take a taxi or Uber here and have your driver wait while you take your photos. Then continue on to either Caminito in La Boca or Calle Lanin in Barracas, since you're in the area.
