Peninsula Valdés juts off of the Chubut province on coastal Patagonia. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its diverse marine life, including southern right whales, sea lions, penguins, elephant seals and various species of birds.
The main village on the peninsula, Puerto Pirámides serves as a hub for eco-tourism activities and whale watching excursions.
🚗 There are two ways to visit the Peninsula Valdés.
As a day trip from Puerto Madryn, ideal if you want to stay in the city (more activities and restaurants) and take day trips to various wildlife locations. It is a full day with the option of whale watching (which you must do!). Book this excursion for a day trip to the peninsula.
Rent a car to get yourself around and base yourself on the peninsula. Puerto Pirámides is a tiny village but there are great restaurants with fresh seafood on offer and good cafes for breakfast. There are hotels for all budgets. Activities are limited, obviously considering the nature of the location. If you like to get off the beaten path and stay somewhere quiet then that is what I recommend. 2 full days is enough (see itinerary for this in the itinerary portion of my guide).
💸 Entry fees: The peninsula is not free to visit. Confirm current entry fees here but at the time of writing a non-Argentine citizen adult cost $45,000 per day. If you are lodging on the peninsula then you only pay this fee once.
