The rough waters around Tierra Del Fuego have had so many shipwrecks that there is a whole section of the Maritime Museum dedicated to them. But the Desdemona shipwreck on the beach of Cabo San Pablo is one of the most well known and is a huge tourist attraction.
In 1985 this massive ship ran aground, but how could things have gone so wrong for a ship like that to end up so high on the beach? Theories run the gamut from whether it really was a problem with the equipment as claimed or was it intentional? Perhaps for insurance or did the captain hold a grudge against his bosses?
Visit at low tide to be able to walk fully around the ship. You can reference the tide chart here but if going on a tour don't worry about it. They'll organize the day around it themselves.
Tours: It's 3 hours from Ushuaia so guided excursions like this are a must - also including visits to nearby sites like an estancia, hiking to the lighthouse, and a visit to Miguel y Silvia's campground and fantastic seafood restaurant. The itinerary can vary.
