Belem Tower, officially called the Tower of Saint Vincent, is a UNESCO world heritage site. It was built during the peak of the Portuguese renaissance.

It is actually often seen as a symbol of the discovery age of Portugal but was at some point used as a prison.

The most cruel prisoners were placed in the lower basement of the tower, and it is said to have been the death penalty as they would drown once the tide came in and flooded the basement.

We used to live in the area and had our daily evening walk passing this beautiful structure, mostly during sunset which is so incredibly beautiful!
