The breathtaking natural caves of Sarakiniko, Milos. What once was a hiding area for pirates and raiders is today one of the most spectacular swimming spots not only on the island of Milos, but also in all of Greece.

This island earned its position on the spotlight in the recent years thanks to its unreal, unique landscapes. Did you know it’s a volcanic island? Its shape suggests the crater was in the middle of the island and the volcanic eruptions of the past have very generously offered the island some of the most stunning rock formations. Sarakiniko is one of those.

As mentioned above, the caves of Milos used to be frequented by pirates in the former times. “Sarakiniko” took its name from the Saracen pirates who used to use this spot as a hideout. The “Saracens” was a term used by Greeks and referred to the Arab Muslim pirates.

There is a small beach on Sarakiniko, in the sense that there's a sandy bay, though it is known much more for its cliff diving spots. Tip: being in the north, it would be best not to visit on windy days with wind coming from the North, as the waters will be rough, wavy and full of currents. A reminder that throughout the months of June, July, August and September, the dominant weather in all of the Aegean Sea is dry, northern winds and clear skies.
