â ïž Important Snorkeling Tips for Rarotongaâ ïž
- đ« Stay Away from the Passages: Currents through the reef passages can be strong and dangerous. Never snorkel near or in them.
- đŹïž Mild Currents at Fruits of Raro: Especially with south-easterly windsâfins are recommended to make swimming easier and safer.
- đ„Ÿ Wear Reef Shoes or Fins: Protect your feet from sharp coral, rocks, stone fish and sea urchins.
- 𧎠Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen or a Rash Shirt: Regular sunscreen damages coral; reef-safe brands or rash shirts are better for your skin and the environment.
- đĄïž Check Tides and Weather: Mid to high tide is safest and easiest for snorkeling at most spots.
- đ¶ Explore Muri Lagoon by Kayak or Paddleboard: For clearer water and better snorkeling around the outer motu (small islands).
- đ Bring Your Own Gear if Possible: Not all beaches have nearby rental shops, and your own gear will usually fit best. (check if your accommodation provides gear too)
- đ Respect the Marine Life: Look but donât touch. Coral is fragile, and marine life needs space to thrive.
