Hike to Whaleshead Beach

Just off the highway, you'll find one of the most breathtaking spots on the coast, Cape Ferrelo. While the view from the parking lot is lovely, the real magic happens after a short, easy one-mile loop trail. The path takes you through a brief forested section before opening up onto a grassy bluff with absolutely stunning, unobstructed views of the rugged shoreline and dramatic sea stacks. It's a perfect spot to catch a sunset, and if you're visiting in the spring or fall, keep your eyes peeled for migrating whales.

The real gem of this location is the hike that follows the Oregon Coast Trail. This roughly 9 mile out and back hike finished at Whaleshead Viewpoint. Once reaching the turnaround point, consider walking down to the beach and soaking up some sun...or in our case, soaking our feet for a refreshing mid-hike recharge. You'll be hiking along the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor which offers some of the most incredible ocean views in addition to soul-restoring hiking trails. Along your hike, be sure to take a handful of side trails, most of which are paths leading to beaches you'll likely have to yourself. If nothing else, take a quick detour to House Rock Viewpoint. Elevation gain on this hike is roughly 1,750' so come prepared with adequate water and snacks.
