Gunma, Japan

Gunma is one of my favorite prefectures in Japan, known for its hot springs, mountain scenery, and relaxing atmosphere. Whether you're heading to Kusatsu Onsen, Minakami, Ikaho Onsen, or Takasaki, there are several convenient ways to reach Gunma from Tokyo.

Option 1: Joetsu Shinkansen (Fastest)

The Joetsu Shinkansen departs from Tokyo Station and is the quickest way to reach many parts of Gunma.

Popular Stops

  • Takasaki Station

  • Jomo-Kogen Station (for Minakami)

  • Annaka-Haruna Station

Travel Time

  • Approximately 50–70 minutes depending on destination

Best For

  • Travelers visiting Minakami

  • Those with a JR Pass

  • Anyone looking to maximize their time

Option 2: Kusatsu-Shima Limited Express (Best for Kusatsu Onsen)

The Kusatsu-Shima Limited Express departs from Ueno Station and travels directly toward the Kusatsu area.

Route

  • Ueno → Takasaki → Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi

From Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station, take a local bus to Kusatsu Onsen.

Travel Time

  • Approximately 2.5–3 hours total from Tokyo to Kusatsu Onsen

Best For

  • Travelers heading directly to Kusatsu Onsen

  • Visitors who prefer a scenic rail journey

  • Those wanting to avoid multiple train transfers

JR Rail Pass:

JR Pass Tip: If you have the JR Rail Pass, you can ride both the Joetsu Shinkansen and the Kusatsu-Shima Limited Express at no additional cost. If you're visiting Kusatsu Onsen, the JR Bus from Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station to Kusatsu Onsen is also covered by the nationwide JR Pass. Be sure to reserve your seat in advance, as all seats on the Kusatsu-Shima are reserved.
