Tucked away in the Albanian Alps, the Blue Eye near Theth is one of the most beautiful natural spots I’ve visited in the country. Surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, this turquoise pool and waterfall is the perfect reward after a bit of effort: whether you're hiking all the way from Theth Village or driving to Nderlysaj and hiking from there.

What is Blue Eye Theth?
The Blue Eye is a turquoise, cold water pool that lives up to its name. While it’s become more popular in recent years, it still feels tucked away, especially if you go early in the day. The surrounding area is peaceful, green, and incredibly photogenic: a great spot to rest, take a dip (if you can brave the cold), or just soak in the view.

Getting There:
In the past, some people would choose to hike all the way from Theth Village to the Blue Eye, which could take 6-8 hours roundtrip. This was because although there is a road from Theth Village to Nderlysaj, it used to be in poor condition and not really possible to drive with a normal car. Recently this has changed: the road from Theth to Nderlysaj (the starting point of the hike) is now paved and easy to drive. In Nderlysaj (just 15 minutes drive from Theth), you will find a parking lot where you can begin the hike. The parking lot is titled “Parking Blue Eye Kaprre” on Google Maps (next to Ndërlysaj Bridge). It may cost just a few euros for parking.

From the parking lot, it can take 1-2 hours to reach the Blue Eye depending on your pace. There are some beautiful views along the way as well.

When to Visit:
The best months are June through September: the weather is great, and it’s quieter than the peak summer season. Head out early in the morning from Theth to beat the crowds and enjoy the Blue Eye in peace.

Swimming?:
Yes, but be ready: the water is cold. Still, a quick dip is refreshing, and there’s a small kiosk nearby if you’d rather relax with a drink. Also, there’s another incredible swimming spot at the “Blue Eye Bridge” just 10 minutes before reaching Blue Eye. I prefer this spot for swimming, and it’s a great spot to just hang out on the rocks.

Where to Eat:
After your hike, you can grab lunch at Restaurant Lulash Zelna in Nderlysaj: it’s right across from the parking area and sits along the river. The setting is beautiful, and the food is fresh, and the fish is quite good. With the new road, you can also just drive back to Theth Village for plenty more options.

What to Bring:
Good walking shoes, water, snacks, a swimsuit if you’re swimming, and some cash because most places in Theth and Nderlysaj don’t accept cards.

Where to Stay:
There are a ton of great family-run guesthouses in Theth. I recommend Bujtina Miqësia and Guesthouse Gjoni. Both are welcoming, family-run guesthouse in Theth with great food. They can also help organize transport or provide tips for the area.

If you're visiting Theth, the Blue Eye is well worth the trip: a mix of adventure, nature, and some of the clearest water you’ll see in Albania.
