Vad du kommer att göra

Theme parks meet hippie villages in 90 kilometers of shoreline. This guide skips the Surfers Paradise high-rises in favor of headland breaks, lighthouse walks, and the small-town side of the Gold Coast and northern NSW.

Day 1

Start where most people don't — the southern Gold Coast headlands rather than the strip. Burleigh Heads is the heart of it: a national park headland with a 20-minute walk through pandanus and gum trees that opens onto one of the best right-hand pointbreaks in Australia. The town behind it has reinvented itself in the last five years with the cafés and surf brands clustered along James Street. The Gold Coast spot itself covers the broader region — base yourself somewhere around Burleigh tonight, not Surfers.

Day 2

Cross the border into NSW. Tweed Heads sits right on the state line and is where the Tweed River meets the Pacific — a quieter, working-class twin to the Gold Coast. Drive to Fingal Head Lighthouse for the morning: hexagonal basalt columns at the base of a small white lighthouse, with a causeway to Cook Island just offshore. Cook Island itself is a marine reserve only accessible by dive boat — book a charter from Tweed if you want to snorkel the wobbegongs and turtles that live around it.

Day 3

Drift south. Pottsville is the first of the small NSW north coast towns and a worthwhile lunch stop. From there the road climbs slightly inland to Mullumbimby, a hinterland village that's all timber pubs, organic groceries, and the Saturday farmers market that locals drive an hour for. Spend the afternoon there before pushing on to Byron Bay for the night.

Day 4

Byron is the closer. Walk the lighthouse track at sunrise — Australia's most easterly point, dolphins reliably visible from the cliff path year-round, and humpbacks during the winter migration. Spend the rest of the day on Wategos and Main Beach, browse the markets if it's a Sunday, and finish with a sunset on Belongil. Drive home from Byron or push on to Ballina airport.
