Vägbeskrivningar

Suomenlinna is a place I return to often, both in summer and winter. The short ferry ride from Helsinki’s Market Square already feels like part of the experience and offers great photo opportunities of the city—especially during sunrise or sunset, when the light wraps around the harbor and islands.

Once on the island, Suomenlinna reveals itself as a unique mix of history and nature. The sea fortress is spread across several islands, with cobbled paths, old walls, tunnels, and open coastal views that work beautifully for both landscape and wildlife photography. Allow at least 2–3 hours to explore, or more if you want to slow down, visit museums, or picnic by the sea. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a windproof layer, as most of the island is outdoors and weather can change quickly.

One thing to keep in mind, especially in spring and early summer: Canada goose families are everywhere and can be surprisingly aggressive if you get too close to the chicks. Give them space and you will be fine.

Suomenlinna is a perfect destination for those who want to experience Finnish history while staying close to the sea, light, and nature—with a camera always close by.
