Deciding whether to hire a driver can be overwhelming, as online groups and airport arrival halls are filled with drivers and tour guides. While hiring a driver with a pre-booked itinerary is very popular, it is not the only option available.
Booking Tips: If you choose to pre-book, check Google and TripAdvisor for the company, but always prioritize a personal recommendation from another tourist.
Alternative: You can spend your first night in Colombo or Negombo and then make arrangements based on recommendations from locals.
Cost: If you prefer not to have the restrictions of a full-time driver, taxis between major towns average 15,000–20,000 LKR.

Tuk-Tuk Drivers in Colombo: Be cautious of drivers who offer to take you to expensive government-run souvenir shops, as they are paid a commission to bring you there.
Short Distances: For short trips and moving around towns, it is safer and cheaper to book Tuk-Tuk taxis via the PickMe App rather than hailing them on the street.
