The Colosseum is an iconic landmark, located right in the centre of the Italian city of Rome. Built as a gift to the people of Rome from Emperor Vespasian, 'the amphitheatre spans approximately 188 metres wide and is 158 metres long - big enough to comfortably seat up to 50,000 people!' Constructed between 72-80 AD, the Colosseum was used for gladiator games, animal hunts, performances, executions and re-enactments of famous battles. Over the past two thousand years, this historic venue has experienced earthquakes, stone robbers taking spolia and other unfortunate weathering - though it has still managed to keep its impressive stature. Today, it is regarded as one of the world's most recognizable monuments and continues to be visited by millions of tourists every year.

If you do a visit, I highly recommend booking ahead of time! The tours book out and it gets very crowded. Night tour seems to be more unique!

If you're touring during the day and don't care to go inside, it's also a nice walk from the Colosseum to the Spanish Steps!
