Sunnegga is an easy place to enjoy Matterhorn views, with no hike necessary. In October, the alpine meadows in this area turns golden and many trees turn red and yellow, giving it a magical fall feeling.

To reach this viewpoint, you ride a funicular from the Zermatt village to Sunnegga. It's one of the least expensive rides in the Zermatt area (CHF 26 round trip in fall 2023), making it a great choice for those on a budget. The funicular usually stays through the middle of October.

Near the Sunnegga mountain station, there's a restaurant with an outdoor terrace facing the Matterhorn. Just below the station, there's a pretty lake with picnic areas and a big playground with swings, slides, climbing structures and water play. If you want some action adventure, you can rent kick scooters to ride back down to Zermatt. For all these reasons, this area is my top choice in Zermatt for families.
