Plan ahead if you want to see of the most iconic lakes in Canada.
There are different ways you can get to Lake Louise Lakeshore:
By Personal Vehicle: if you want to drive up to Lake Louise Lakeshore and get a parking spot, you will need to get there super early (around 6am or even earlier) as spots fill up super quick. It tends to stay full till sunset. If you don't get a spot, you will be turned away. If you do manage to get a spot, parking costs are $36.75 for each vehicle. THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you want a stress free time.
You can check parking information here.
ROAM Public Transit. You can use ROAM Transit and take the 8X bus from Banff town to Lake Louise Lakeshore. You can reserve a pass:
One way reservations cost $12.50 ea. for adults. The one way reservation DOES NOT include the lake connector to Moraine Lake and cannot be upgraded to a super Pass. This can be paid online or in person.
Reservable Super pass: provides unlimited travel on all ROAM Transit services (for a day) and includes the Lake Connector Shuttle (every 30 minutes) between Lake Louise Lakeshore and Moraine Lake. It is a round trip and not one-way. The last Connector Shuttle leaves Lake Louise Lakeshore at 5:30 p.m., and the last departure from Moraine Lake is at 7:00 p.m. If you want to visit both lakes this is the way to go.
It costs $30 for the day and is probably the best option. A super pass can ONLY be reserved online.
If you don't have a reservation, you are considered a walk on passenger. 40% of seats on each departure are allocated for walk-up riders without reservations, filled on a first-come-first-served basis. Unfortunately, wait times can be long. If you have a non-reservable ticket, your entire group must be prepared to wait in line for 1-3 departures of the 8X service before seats become available (your entire group MUST be present to join the cue)
Parks Canada Shuttle: HAS to be reserved online and a reservation includes a lake connector to Moraine Lake. Shuttle frequency is from 6:30am - 6pm & the last return shuttle is 7:30pm. 60% of the shuttle tickets are released at 8 am MT two days before, so check back two days in advance for more availability. If you have a ticket you can park for free at the Lake Louise Park N Ride.
Commercial Tour buses: Brewster Sightseeing, Discover Banff Tours, Fairview Limousine, HopOnBanff, Moraine Lake Bus Company, Mountain Park Transportation. Radventures, Ten Peaks Shuttle & Tours, Yamnuska, ABest Transport and Tour Services, Alpine Limousine & Tours, Banff Sedan
Hiking: The Tramline Trail (4.3 km one way) is a safe way to connect the community of Lake Louise to the Lake Louise Lakeshore. This route takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to hike one way to the Lake Louise Lakeshore.
There is very limited all-day parking at Lake Louise. Walking along Lake Louise Drive is NOT recommended as it is narrow and has heavy traffic (there's no sidewalk for walkers)
Cycling: Cycling is permitted along Lake Louise Drive (4 km one way) between the community of Lake Louise and the Lake Louise Lakeshore. This narrow mountain road has minimal shoulders and heavy traffic. It’s best to ride early or late in the day when traffic volume is lower.
Personal vehicles are no longer allowed on the Moraine Lake Road at any time of year. To visit this iconic spot, you’ll need to take one of the following options:
Parks Canada Shuttle (60% of daily shuttle seats are released at 8 am MDT two days prior to departure.)
Roam Transit Super Pass which includes the Lake Connector (If you don't have a reservation for Roam Transit and are a walk on passenger, you DO NOT get access to the Lake Connector
Commercial Tour Bus (options stated above)
Bike or E-bike
