Seasonality!

Some things aren't open all year round.

Banff National Park and the Icefields Parkway are stunning year-round, but it’s important to plan around seasonal changes:

  • Moraine Lake is closed to personal vehicles year-round and is only accessible by Parks Canada shuttle, commercial tour, or by biking/hiking. The road typically opens from late May to early October, depending on snow conditions.

  • The Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) remains open year-round, but many services (gas stations, accommodations, washrooms, and restaurants) shut down from late fall to spring. Always fuel up in Lake Louise or Jasper before heading out in the off-season. And always check road conditions beforehand.

  • Winter Closures: Popular attractions like Peyto Lake viewpoint, Bow Summit, Sunwapta Falls upper trail, and others may be inaccessible or unmaintained due to heavy snow and avalanche risk. Trails and parking areas can be icy or closed.

  • Shoulder Seasons (April–mid-June & October–mid-November) can bring variable weather—some summer roads/trails remain closed due to snow, while winter activities may not yet be available.
