Moraine Lake is just outside of Lake Louise and is easily one of the most photographed spots in Banff National Park, and for good reason. Whether you're hiking, paddling, or just taking in the view, Moraine Lake feels like something out of a dream. The water is an unreal turquoise color—caused by glacier-fed rock flour—and it sits in a dramatic bowl surrounded by the Valley of the Ten Peaks.

Getting there takes a bit of planning, though. The lake is only accessible in summer due to the snow accumulation in winter. As of 2023, you can’t drive your personal vehicle to the lake. Instead, you’ll need to book a Parks Canada shuttle, a private shuttle, or go with a guided tour. The shuttle system runs from late June to mid-October, departing from the Lake Louise Ski Resort park-and-ride. Whatever option you choose, book ahead as things get booked out quick!

Once you’re there, take the short walk up the Rockpile Trail—it’s where you’ll get that classic postcard view of the lake. It's only a couple of minutes so don't worry. It gets really crowded so be prepared but you'll want to do it as you get the best views from the top. Canoe rentals are available too (pricey, but unforgettable), and if you can time your visit for sunrise, the glow on the mountains is next-level.

There is no cell service in the area, so be prepared. There is a cafe, but it closes around 4pm so if you arrive anytime after that, you'll need to arrange your own food. Pack layers (it can get chilly even in summer), bring water and snacks, and if you’re hiking, carry bear spray—this is grizzly country. The nearby trails are Larch Valley Trail, Consolation Lakes Trail, and Tower of Babel Trail (this should only be attempted if you have scrambling experience and a helmet). There’s also no lodging right at the lake, but you’ll find plenty of options in nearby Lake Louise, from hotels and hostels to campgrounds.

If you're visiting Banff, make Moraine Lake a top priority. It’s one of those rare places where the photos still don’t do it justice - once you're there, you’ll see why.
