Sentinel Pass is a bucket-list hike. It starts from the iconic Moraine Lake, and takes you through the beauty of Larch Valley before leading you to a dramatic, high-alpine pass with panoramic views.
The trail begins at the Moraine Lake parking lot (which now requires a shuttle or other transit option due to limited vehicle access). The first 2.4 km consists of switchbacks through the forest (a bit of a grind) but once you break into the open, you’re greeted by the Larch Valley. In summer, it's lush and green; in fall, it's filled with gold as the larch trees turn vibrant yellow.
From the valley, the trail continues another 2.5 km up a rocky slope toward Sentinel Pass, gaining elevation quickly. It’s a good challenge but not too difficult. At the top, you're treated to 360° views: It's truly an unbelievable view.
In total, the round-trip distance is about 11.2 km with around 800 m of elevation gain. It’s best tackled from late June to early October, depending on snow conditions. Keep in mind that this area is prime grizzly bear habitat, and Parks Canada often recommends or requires group hiking (of four or more people), especially during larch season.
