Sunshine Meadows is a place not everyone has heard of but it's a high-alpine dream. It's a wide-open expanse of wildflower-filled meadows, stunning lakes, and panoramic mountain views. It Located at Sunshine Village, just a 20-minute drive from Banff. This area is known for having some of the best accessible alpine scenery in the Canadian Rockies — with far less effort than most hikes require.
From late June through early October, you can reach the meadows via the Sunshine Village gondola and shuttle bus combo, which takes you up to the trailhead at around 2,200 metres elevation (you can also just drive to the base and then take the gondola up). From there, you’re already in the alpine — no grueling ascent needed. The trail network is well-marked and offers a variety of options, from short and easy loops to longer half-day hikes that wind past Rock Isle Lake, Grizzly Lake, and Larix Lake.
The views here are wide and open — think sweeping ridgelines, turquoise lakes, and a sea of wildflowers in July and August. In fall, the larch trees turn golden, making Sunshine Meadows one of the best places in Banff National Park to catch the autumn color show.
Parking is available at the Sunshine Village base. From there, you’ll either take the gondola (approx. 20 mins) or a shuttle bus (available during shoulder season or in poor weather) to reach the start of the trails.
