The Inkpots Trail is a beautiful and rewarding hike that combines the forested charm of Johnston Canyon with a peaceful alpine valley dotted by vibrant, spring-fed mineral pools. If you’re looking to go beyond the popular catwalks and waterfalls of Johnston Canyon, the hike to the Inkpots is the perfect extension — quieter, more serene, and full of natural beauty.
The hike is about 11.3 km round trip from the parking area, with roughly 565metres of elevation gain. It begins on the same path as the famous Lower and Upper Falls of Johnston Canyon — so expect crowds on that portion. Once you pass the Upper Falls, the trail becomes quieter as it winds uphill through forest and meadows. It still gets busy so we recommend starting as early as you can.
After a steady climb, you’ll arrive in a stunning alpine clearing where seven colorful spring pools bubble up from underground. The water is rich in minerals and stays a steady temperature year-round, which creates their vibrant blue-green hues. Some are clear, others almost milky, and each is slightly different in tone and motion. The valley itself is also beautiful — framed by mountains and full of wildflowers in summer. It's a gorgeous spot for lunch.
