If you're up for a scenic workout with a rewarding summit and sweeping views of Banff, the Sulphur Mountain Trail is a classic. This popular hike takes you to the same breathtaking summit as the Banff Gondola — but is a free active alternative

The trail starts at the Banff Gondola parking lot, just a short drive or shuttle ride from town. From there, it’s a steady 5.5 km one-way climb (11 km return) with about 750 meters of elevation gain. The path is a well-maintained series of switchbacks through dense forest. It’s not technical, but it’s a solid uphill trek — bring water and pace yourself.

Views are limited for much of the ascent, but you’ll get occasional glimpses of the Bow Valley and Cascade Mountain through the trees. The best views are when you reach the top. You’ll pop out right next to the Banff Gondola upper terminal, where you’ll find washrooms, a café, indoor exhibits, and Sky Bistro if you’re craving a reward meal with a view. The 360° views from the upper decks are incredible. You can also walk the short boardwalk trail from the summit to the historic Cosmic Ray Station, which offers even more panoramic views and a quiet spot to relax away from the main platform crowds.

For the descent, you can either hike back down the same trail or, if your legs are toast and you don’t mind spending a bit, take the Banff Gondola down. One-way tickets are available at the top (approx. $50 CAD for adults — check at the summit for current prices).

The trail is open year-round, but in winter or early spring, it can be icy — microspikes are strongly recommended. There’s no water on the trail, so bring plenty, especially in summer.
