Consolation Lakes is a great trail if you're looking to get away from the crowds at Moraine Lake.. It’s a 6.3 km round-trip hike from the Moraine Lake parking area with around 275 meters of elevation. This trail passes through prime bear habitat, so it is strongly recommended to hike in groups and carry bear spray.
The trail starts just past the rockpile trail and winds gently through the lush forest alongside Babel Creek. It’s an easy, well-maintained path with minimal elevation gain, making it ideal for casual hikers and families. After about 30–45 minutes, you’ll arrive at the first of the Consolation Lakes — it is framed by towering peaks like Mount Babel and Quadra Mountain. It’s a peaceful place to picnic, dip your feet in the cold water, or just sit and soak in the silence. Of course, the water is all glacial fed so will be freezing! If you’re feeling adventurous, you can carefully scramble over the rocks to get a closer look at the second lake, though the footing can be tricky.
There are no services on the trail or at the lakes, but there are washrooms at the Moraine Lake parking lot. To get here, you will need to take a shuttle service to the trailhead from Banff or Lake Louise which must be booked in advance.
