Taylor Lake

Taylor Lake is an underrated gem— a peaceful, tree-lined lake nestled in the heart of the Rockies that feels wild and remote, despite being just off the Trans-Canada Highway.

The trailhead is located just off Highway 1, and it’s well-marked with a small parking lot. From there, it’s a steady 6.5 km (one way) hike with around 900 meters of elevation gain. The trail climbs gradually through lush forest, and while it doesn’t offer much in the way of views on the way up, the payoff at the top is worth it.

When you reach Taylor Lake, you'll see the emerald-green alpine lake surrounded by rugged cliffs. In late spring and early summer, the meadows around the lake come alive with wildflowers, and in the fall, golden larches are everywhere. There are plenty of spots to sit, snack, or even dip your feet in the chilly water.

This trail is best from late June to October, when the snow has melted and the trail is dry. It does get cold near the lake so layers are recommended. It’s a good workout but not overly technical, making it ideal for intermediate hikers or anyone looking for a quieter alternative to Banff’s more famous lakes. You can snowshoe this in winter as well but should be fully prepared.
