Medicine Lake is a place full of mystery, Indigenous legend, and ever-changing scenery that keeps you coming back in different seasons. It is located about 20 km southeast of Jasper along the Maligne Lake Road, and is famous for a fascinating natural phenomenon: it vanishes each fall.
In spring and summer, Medicine Lake appears full and serene, reflecting the surrounding mountains. But as the year progresses, the water level drops dramatically — not due to evaporation, but because the lake drains underground through a complex cave system in the surrounding limestone. This gives it its name, as Indigenous stories once explained the disappearing water as the work of “powerful medicine.”
There are several pull-offs along the road where you can stop and admire the lake and enjoy the peacefulness. The landscape is especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset. We came here for sunset and the colors were incredible. Wildlife is also commonly spotted in this area — bighorn sheep, bears, deer, and bald eagles are frequent visitors. It's a great spot to slow down on your way to or from Maligne Lake, which lies just beyond Medicine Lake.
The road is paved and accessible by all vehicles. In winter, the road may be closed past the lake, but it's still reachable if conditions are good. There is no service so be sure to download offline maps before hand and pack snacks & water.
