The Albertina is one of Vienna’s most prestigious art museums, set within a former Habsburg palace overlooking the Opera. It’s renowned for its extraordinary collection of prints and drawings including masterpieces by Dürer, Michelangelo, and Raphael as well as its elegant state rooms. Blending imperial grandeur with world‑class exhibitions, the Albertina is a cornerstone of Vienna’s cultural landscape.
When I visited, the exhibition Modern Gothic was on display, exploring how 19th and early 20th century artists such as Munch, Kollwitz and Gallen‑Kallela drew from medieval Gothic aesthetics to express trauma, death, sexuality and existential angst. More than 200 works were shown, bridging Scandinavian, German and Belgian modernism with medieval visual traditions. The exhibition has now ended but it’s well worth checking what’s on during your visit!
The museum also has a sister institution, Albertina Modern, dedicated to post‑1945 and contemporary art.
