Founded in 1365, the University of Vienna is one of Europe’s oldest universities. This vast Neo‑Renaissance labyrinth is a place where scholars, revolutionaries and dreamers have all walked the same arcaded corridors.

Stepping through the entrance, I was amazed to find a series of old courtyards and cloisters where the architecture draws heavily on Italian Renaissance styles, with an added darker touch brought about by the shadows gathering beneath the arches.

The central courtyard is one of the university’s most atmospheric spaces. Surrounded by arcades, it feels almost monastic in design, with cloisters created for scholars instead of monks. Lined with old wooden benches, it’s a place where students sit to read, debate and daydream.
