Beneath the surface of Stephansplatz lies the Virgilkapelle. Built in the early 13th century, the medieval chapel once formed part of a larger Gothic complex dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. For centuries it lay forgotten, entombed beneath layers of reconstruction, until the U‑Bahn excavations of the 1970s revealed its vaulted ribs and ancient walls.

The Virgilkapelle is pure early Gothic at its most elemental structural honesty, with pointed arches and a geometry designed to evoke humility rather than grandeur.

Dedicated to Mary Magdalene, the chapel once served as a space for contemplation and repentance. Unlike many museum spaces, the Virgilkapelle has not been polished into museum sterility. The archaeological presentation enhances its mood, fragments of stone, exposed foundations and the raw textures of the medieval floor create a rare sense of authenticity.
