If we had to pick one hike in the entire Canadian Rockies that delivers the most jaw-dropping views for the effort required, Tent Ridge would be a very strong contender. Starting from Spray Lakes West Road south of Canmore, this horseshoe loop climbs onto a sweeping ridgeline offering 360-degree views of the Kananaskis Valley, the Spray Lakes Reservoir, Mount Shark, and wave after wave of Rocky Mountain peaks in every direction. It is, quite simply, stunning from the moment you hit the ridge to the moment you drop back into the trees.
The hike is accessible to fit, experienced hikers, but it demands respect. The upper ridge involves sections of easy scrambling — hands on rock, some exposure — and the horseshoe traverse is narrow in places with steep drop-offs on either side. It's not a trail to attempt in wet or icy conditions, and the exposed ridgeline leaves nowhere to hide if a storm rolls in, which in Kananaskis can happen with startling speed. Check the forecast carefully before heading out and turn back without hesitation if the weather turns.
Get it on a bluebird day, however, and Tent Ridge will stay with you for a very long time.
Distance: ~11 km loop
Elevation Gain: ~700 m
Difficulty: Moderate–Challenging (easy scrambling required)
Tip: The trailhead is roughly 30 km south of Canmore on Spray Lakes West Road — a good gravel road, but worth knowing it's not paved.
