As you walk up a wide set of steps from The Mall you will see before you a tall column topped with a man. He is Prince Frederick, Duke of York, third son of King George III. “The grand old Duke of York, he had ten thousand men, he marched them up to the top of the hill and he marched them down again” goes the children’s nursery rhyme. Frederick was commander-in-chief of the British Army that fought in the French Revolutionary Wars, the Europe-wide conflict of the late 18th century. When he died in 1827 all members of the army agreed by consensus to forego one day’s pay to fund the creation of Frederick’s memorial column here at Waterloo Place.
