Madeira island, Portugal

These days, there are so many ways to explore Madeira.

You could book an organised tour with a travel company, joining a group with a guide and staying at multiple accommodations along the way.

Prefer to travel independently? Rent a car and book your own stays in different parts of the island. My recommendation is to keep it at a max of 3 accommodations when staying 7-10 days.

Or – my personal favourite – rent a campervan from I:land Vans and take your bed with you!

For us, it was a unique experience we’d happily repeat. Even though we live on the island, it’s such a treat to escape for a few days.

We rented the camper for three days and two nights, choosing a road trip through northern Madeira: first the mountains in the northwest, then the seaside in the northeast. The contrast made the trip even more special.

Luxury Camping on Wheels
The I:land Vans campervan comes fully equipped with everything you need:

  • Compact kitchen with fridge (including freezer compartment), hob, pots, pans, crockery, glasses, mugs, tea towels, dish soap, sponge, and essentials like pepper, salt, and olive oil.

  • Chemical toilet and shower (for hot water, turn on the boiler about an hour in advance).

  • Seating area with fold-out table.

  • Spacious double bed with bedding and pillows.

  • Overhead storage, two bedside shelves, two reading lamps, and a small fan.

  • Indoor and outdoor lighting, plus plenty of charging points for electronics.

  • Large storage space under the bed, accessible from the back, with cleaning supplies, extra towels, a camping table and chairs, and a parasol.

I may have forgotten a few details, but as you can see: this is true luxury camping.

Extra Tips
The owners, Paulo from Madeira and Linda from the Netherlands, are always happy to answer any questions you have.

If you go on a campervan trip, I highly recommend downloading the Park4Night app. You’ll find all the best overnight spots on the island, plus information on where to refill water and other practical tips.
