Madeira island, Portugal

Thinking of pitching your tent in Madeira’s stunning forest areas? Here’s the deal: all camping in public forest zones is regulated and you must have a license from the Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza (IFCN, IP-RAM).

The good news? The process is free – you just need to request your permit in advance. The IFCN even has a video guide to walk you through it (you can find it on their official website).

How it works:

  • Apply for your camping license through the IFCN.

  • Wait for approval before heading out – no last-minute wild camping allowed.

The Rules (Resolution No. 535/2020):

  • Keep a minimum distance of 5 metres between tents (unless you’re part of the same household).

  • Take all your rubbish with you – no matter what it is. Leave nothing but footprints!

  • Fires are strictly forbidden outside of designated fire pits or cooking areas.

Campervans?
If you’re travelling with a van, rules are a bit different, but you still can’t just park overnight in forest camping zones without the proper permit. Always check before you settle in.
