On the far west side of Madeira you’ll find a quiet (for now) spot, called: ‘Miradouro da Boa Morte’, which literally translates to ‘viewpoint of good death’.

The name may provoke some thoughts, but it actually refers to its small chapel at the start of the tiny trail.

This chapel is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte (Our Lady of Good Death), a title of the Virgin Mary that reflects devotion to a peaceful and holy passing into eternal life.

The sight has a rich history dating back to the 17th century and the chapel was officially authorized on the 22nd of June 1666.

The easiest way to get here is by driving from Funchal, take the VR1 expressway west towards Ribeira Brava, then follow the ER101 to Ponta do Pargo. The drive takes about 1 hour.

Best time to visit, for me, is definitely golden hour for beautiful lighting, but if you prefer a peaceful atmosphere with fewer people, morning are ideal

Since the viewpoint is still a hidden gem compared to other popular 'miradouros' on the island, you might find yourself enjoying the scenery completely alone.
