Porto da Cruz is a small and peaceful village on the north coast of Madeira, known for its dramatic coastal landscapes and rich traditions. The name Porto da Cruz (meaning "Harbor of the Cross") comes from the early Portuguese settlers, who placed a wooden cross near the shore to mark the landing spot.

One of the village’s most famous attractions is the Engenho do Norte, one of the last working rum factories in Madeira. This distillery, dating back to 1927, still produces traditional rum using steam-powered machinery. Visitors can tour the factory, learn about the sugarcane industry, and even sample the local aguardente de cana (sugarcane rum).

For nature lovers, the Levada do Castelejo is a fantastic hike that starts in Porto da Cruz. This scenic trail follows an old irrigation channel through lush valleys and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, including the striking Penha de Águia rock formation.

With its rugged beauty, rich history, and welcoming atmosphere, Porto da Cruz is a great stop for those looking to experience the authentic charm of Madeira’s north coast.
