The Nun’s Valley, or Curral das Freiras, is one of the most unique and secluded spots on Madeira. Nestled in the heart of the island, this valley is surrounded by towering mountains, offering spectacular views. The valley gets its name from the nuns of the Santa Clara convent in Funchal, who sought refuge here in the 16th century to escape pirate attacks and became fully self-sufficient living of the chestnut harvest.

Today, it’s a peaceful location featuring a quaint village where you can enjoy traditional dishes, particularly those made with chestnuts, as the valley is famous for its chestnut trees. There are also numerous hiking trails to explore or simply take in the breathtaking landscape.
