The Rocha do Navio viewpoint, located in Santana on Madeira's north east coast, offers stunning panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding coastline. On a clear day you even get to see the other island of Porto Santo from here! The area features the Ilhéu da Viúva, a small island rising 94 meters high, known for its rich botanical heritage and unique plant species. This site is part of the Natura 2000 Network.
A steep path from the viewpoint used to lead down to the Rocha do Navio Natural Reserve, named after a 19th-century shipwreck of a Dutch boat. Unfortunately this path has, however, been closed since landslides and rockfall occurred, but you are still able to take the cable car down. This marine reserve, stretching between Ponta do Clérigo and Ponta de São Jorge, includes Ilhéu da Viúva and Ilhéu da Rocha das Vinhas.
You may have to park a bit further down the road, before reaching the viewpoint with the cable car, as there have been some construction works. But it's clearly signposted.
